BMS Estimating and Engineering
PART IV: Engineering in Visio
Session 15: Building Projects and Systems in Visio
Course Code: CENG-15
Goal: Generate a complete system layout in Visio by importing estimate data from CUBE, combining system pages, and producing a final project drawing set.
Session Overview
Duration: 1 Hour
Format: Instructor-led (via Microsoft Teams or in-person)
Level: Intermediate to Advanced (Visio-based system layout and documentation)
Resources Provided:
- Visio System Build Starter File
- Sample Estimate for Import
- Auto Layout Quick Guide
- Drawing Set Checklist
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Start a Visio project directly from a CUBE estimate.
- Use the “Build Your Project” tool to import and lay out systems.
- Activate, merge, and organize system pages for clarity and flow.
- Reorganize components using the Auto Layout feature for clean diagrams.
- Finalize and export a complete, organized drawing set for internal or client use.
- Create standalone systems using the “Build Your System” tool
Session Agenda
15.1 Starting from Estimate
- Overview of estimate-to-Visio integration.
- Selecting an estimate and identifying which systems to import.
- Preparing estimate data for drawing generation (verifying structure, tags, and completeness)
- Opening Visio with integration enabled and selecting system inputs
15.2 Importing Systems Using “Build Your Project”
- Using the “Build Your Project” tool in the CUBE Visio Add-In.
- Selecting multiple systems for import.
- Automatically generating pages for each system.
- Initial layout and visual linking of components.
- Real-time sync with CUBE data
15.3 Activating and Combining System Pages
- Activating system pages and setting visibility.
- Combining related systems (e.g., VAV + control panel + sensors).
- Renaming pages and establishing logical flow for multi-page drawings.
- Creating cover pages and index sheets as part of the set
15.4 Reorganizing Components with Auto Layout
- Using the Auto Layout tool to clean up overlapping symbols.
- Spacing, alignment, and connection paths.
- Grouping similar components for schematic clarity.
- Best practices for manual adjustments after auto layout
15.5 Final Output as a Complete Drawing Set
- Reviewing pages for accuracy, consistency, and labeling.
- Adding title blocks, drawing numbers, and revision fields.
- Exporting to PDF for submission.Saving Visio files as templates for future use
15.6 Create Systems Using “Build Your System”
- Overview of the “Build Your System” tool for generating one system at a time.
- Use cases: quick edits, modular page creation, small projects.
- Linking newly built systems to existing estimate pages or drawings.
Hands-On Exercises
Participants will:
- Select a sample estimate and launch the “Build Your Project” function.
- Generate multiple system pages and apply Auto Layout.
- Combine and reorder pages for a logical drawing set.
- Finalize and export a PDF of the completed system layout.
- Create an individual system using the “Build Your System” feature
Post-Session Action Items
To reinforce the session, participants are encouraged to:
- Generate a complete layout using one of their active estimates.
- Customize page headers, titles, and drawing numbers for consistency.
- Create a reusable Visio template with cover, system, and legend pages.
- Work with engineering to verify Auto Layout results and optimize spacing rules
