PART IV: Engineering in Visio

Session 14: Using the CUBE Toolbar in Visio

Course Code: CENG-14

Goal: Use the CUBE toolbar in Microsoft Visio to access essential engineering tools and features for efficient control system layout, tagging, and documentation workflows.

Session Overview

Duration: 1 Hour
Format: Instructor-led (via Microsoft Teams or in-person)
Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Resources Provided:

  • CUBE Toolbar Quick Reference Guide.
  • Sample Drawing File with Toolbar Tools Demonstrated.
  • Help Center Access Link.
  • Tagging & BOM Tool Worksheet

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and navigate the “My CUBE” ribbon in Visio.
  • Access engineering tools to support system building and layout tasks.
  • Use built-in functions for tagging, system configuration, and BOM generation.
  • Understand how to access help resources and support options through the toolbar.

Session Agenda

14.1 Overview of “My CUBE” Ribbon and Functions

  • Introduction to the CUBE toolbar in Microsoft Visio.
  • Key ribbon sections:
    • Project Tools.
    • Tagging Tools.
    • BOM Tools.Layout Utilities
  • How the ribbon connects directly to estimate and component data in CUBE.
  • Customizing the ribbon for your workflow

14.2 Accessing System-Building Tools

  • Overview of tools used to:
    • Insert components.
    • Link shapes to systems.
    • Build layouts and connect system elements
  • Real-world use cases: building a control panel layout or VAV system diagram.
  • Benefits of using toolbar-based tools over manual symbol placement

14.3 Exploring Layout, Tagging, and BOM Tools

  • Using layout tools to align, scale, and distribute components in a clean format.
  • Applying Tagging Tools to devices, labels, and I/O points.
  • Automatically generating a Bill of Materials (BOM) from placed shapes.
  • Exporting BOM data for use in estimating, procurement, or engineering

14.4 Navigating Help and Support Resources

  • Accessing built-in help links from the toolbar.
  • Opening CUBE knowledge base articles directly from Visio.
  • Reporting issues or requesting support via integrated links.
  • Best practices for getting quick help through the toolbar

Hands-On Exercises

Participants will:

  • Open the “My CUBE” ribbon in Visio and explore available functions.
  • Insert and tag a few sample components using toolbar options.
  • Use alignment and layout tools to organize a basic system diagram.
  • Generate and export a BOM from the drawing.
  • Access a help article from within the toolbar

Post-Session Action Items

To reinforce learning, participants are encouraged to:

  • Use the “My CUBE” ribbon in active Visio drawings.
  • Create a simple project layout and apply tags using toolbar tools.
  • Generate and review BOM exports to verify accuracy.
  • Bookmark help links and identify at least one support resource to use later
