PART III: Component & Assembly Engineering

Session 11: Component Workshop

Course Code: CENG-11
Goal: Apply component engineering skills in a live, guided workshop to reinforce best practices and build confidence using components in real-world estimating and engineering workflows.

Session Overview

Duration: 1 Hour
Format: Live Web Meeting (Instructor-led via Microsoft Teams)
Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Resources Provided:

  • Component Creation Quick Guide.
  • Visio Integration Reference Sheet.
  • Drawing + Component Mapping Template

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Create and configure components in a live environment.
  • Duplicate existing components and adapt them to different use cases.
  • Apply components directly into estimates and visual tools like Visio.
  • Connect components to engineering drawings for documentation and traceability.
  • Practice live collaboration and problem-solving with the instructor.

Session Agenda

11.1 Create a New Component Live

  • Real-time creation of a new component with step-by-step instructor walkthrough.
  • Define core details: name, classification, tags, description.
  • Add parts, labor, utility items, and associated metadata.
  • Review best practices for consistent naming and categorization.

11.2 Duplicate and Modify Components

  • Use duplication to create variants from existing components.
  • Modify materials or labor to match specific job types or panel needs.
  • Rename components for different applications while maintaining structure.
  • Save changes and organize within the component library.

11.3 Use in Estimate + Use in Visio

  • Add the created component directly into an active estimate.

  • Review how it affects material and labor totals.

  • Link component to Visio symbol for schematic integration.

  • Discuss best practices for maintaining visual and data alignment

11.4 Connect with Library and Drawing

  • Assign the new component to a specific system template or library group.

  • Link component to drawing documentation for use in project turnover.

  • Discuss workflow from component creation → estimate inclusion → engineering export.

  • Explore real-world applications in panels, field kits, and submittals

Workshop Exercises (Live)

During the session, participants will:

  • Create a custom component using a real project example.
  • Duplicate a component and modify labor and part details.
  • Place components into an estimate and analyze cost impact.
  • Use Visio to visually represent the component in a schematic.
  • Discuss integration between estimating, design, and field documentation

Post-Session Action Items

To reinforce the workshop learning, participants are encouraged to:

  • Finalize and save components created during the live session.
  • Standardize component groups for panels or device kits.
  • Review estimate files where components can be updated or optimized.
  • Collaborate with engineering to align symbols and part references.
  • Document the internal workflow for component creation, use, and approval
