BMS Estimating and Engineering
PART II: Estimating: From Concept to Cost
Session 7: Working with Schedules
Course Code: CENG-07
Goal: Use schedules to standardize system design, streamline estimate development, and enhance coordination between engineering and estimating teams.
Session Overview
Duration: 1 Hour
Format: Instructor-led (Microsoft Teams or in-person)
Level: Intermediate
Resources Provided:
- Schedules Training.
- VAV Schedule Template.
- Network Schedule Sample.
- Schedule-to-Estimate Mapping Guide.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Create and modify VAV schedules for consistent system setup.
- Build and apply network schedules to support control system design.
- Link schedules directly to estimates for accurate scope, quantity, and cost alignment.
- Understand how schedule-driven estimating supports engineering, field deployment, and BOM accuracy
Session Agenda
7.1 Creating and Modifying VAV Schedules
- Overview of VAV (Variable Air Volume) schedules and their role in system standardization.
- Creating VAV schedules from scratch or using a template.
- Editing device types, quantities, zones, and control logic.
- Applying naming conventions for consistency across projects.
- Reviewing common use cases: VAV zones, terminal units, and airflow control devices
7.2 Network Schedules: Setup & Application
- Purpose of network schedules in automation and control system planning.
- Structuring a network schedule: controllers, panels, trunks, and device groupings.
- Linking devices to control panels and identifying communication routes.
- Planning for network segmentation, redundancy, and scalability.
- Reviewing sample network schedules and applying them to mock projects.
7.3 Linking Schedules to Estimates
-
Associating schedule entries (e.g., VAV boxes, sensors, controllers) with estimate systems.
-
Automatically populating system quantities based on the schedule.
-
Updating estimates dynamically as schedules change.
-
Ensuring alignment between schedules, BOM, and system-level pricing.
-
Exporting schedule data for coordination with engineering and field teams
Hands-On Exercises
Participants will:
- Create a basic VAV schedule using a provided template.
- Modify quantities and apply custom naming to reflect a project layout.
- Build a network schedule with two controller levels and associated devices.
- Link schedule components to an existing estimate and verify system updates.
- Export a finalized schedule for review and coordination
Post-Session Action Items
To reinforce training, participants are encouraged to:
- Create VAV and network schedules for an upcoming or active project.
- Review current estimates to ensure schedule alignment.
- Develop internal templates for frequently used VAV or network configurations.
- Collaborate with engineering to standardize how schedule data feeds into estimates
Note: When scheduling, make sure to include this session code: CENG-07.
